The manufacturing software developer Sescoi has been working with the Algerian Centre for the Development of Advanced Technologies (CDTA) in a collaborative project aimed at demonstrating rapid prototyping and mould machining techniques and the latest CAD/CAM technology to Algerian manufacturers in a variety of industries. A seminar in early June at CDTA headquarters in Algiers attracted more than 50 engineers and managers from leading Algerian companies, as well as representatives from national research institutions and universities. During the seminar, Sescoi engineers described the entire “digital chain,” from product design through industrialization, outlining all the steps in the process and illustrating how WorkNC, Sescoi’s automated computer-aided manufacturing system, and WorkNC-CAD, its computer-aided design software for manufacturing, together provide a complete automatic software package enabling companies to achieve significant gains in productivity. The machining facilities at CDTA enabled visitors to see the complete sequence of mould production in action, starting with manipulation of the tool design and CNC programming in WorkNC and culminating in the machining of complex 3D cavities for a rigid plastic packaging component. The seminar looked at applications in the automotive, aerospace, nuclear, defense, food, household appliance, toy, and foundry industries, examining the differences and commonalities between them. To explain how digital techniques work in an industrial environment, CDTA introduced a mould making expert specializing in tooling for the automotive market. The partnership between CDTA and Sescoi has facilitated further research into productivity improvement. The Algerian technology centre’s collaborative projects with institutions and companies in France, Germany, South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Canada, Ireland, South Korea, Poland, and Spain are intended to promote the development, sharing, and implementation of new advanced manufacturing methods.
